BIG is launching a large-scale urban project for the city of Gelephu in Bhutan. This project is inspired by the country's culture and its principles of happiness and is called the "Mindfulness City."
"Mindfulness City" could refer to a concept of urban design and planning that prioritizes the well-being and mental health of its inhabitants. In a Mindfulness City, the physical environment, infrastructure, and social systems are designed to promote mindfulness, stress reduction, and overall mental well-being. Some features might characterize a "Mindfulness City":
Green Spaces: Ample parks, gardens, and greenery throughout the city provide opportunities for relaxation, meditation, and connection with nature, all of which can contribute to mindfulness.
Accessible Meditation Spaces: Public meditation spaces, mindfulness centers, or quiet areas are scattered throughout the city, offering residents places to pause, reflect, and practice mindfulness.
Walkability and Bikeability: Pedestrian-friendly streets, bike lanes, and walkable neighborhoods encourage physical activity and provide opportunities for mindful movement and commuting.
Mindful Architecture: Buildings designed with principles of biophilic design, incorporating natural light, greenery, and open spaces, can foster a sense of calm and connection to the environment.
Community Engagement: Strong community bonds and social connections are encouraged through shared spaces, community events, and programs focused on mindfulness, stress reduction, and mental health.
Mindful Transportation: Emphasis on public transportation, carpooling, and alternative modes of transport not only reduces environmental impact but also promotes mindful commuting and reduces stress associated with traffic congestion.
Noise Reduction: Efforts to minimize noise pollution through urban planning, sound barriers, and regulations contribute to a more peaceful and mindful urban environment.
Digital Balance: Initiatives promoting digital detox, digital wellness, and strategies for healthy technology use help residents maintain a balance between their online and offline lives, fostering mindfulness and mental well-being.
Mindful Education: Schools and educational institutions integrate mindfulness practices into their curriculum, teaching students techniques for stress management, emotional regulation, and self-awareness.
Supportive Policies: City policies and initiatives prioritize mental health, mindfulness, and well-being, with resources allocated for mental health services, counseling, and community support programs.
I believe that a Mindfulness City would strive to create an environment that not only economic development but supports residents in leading balanced, mindful lives, with a focus on mental health, well-being, and sustainable living. I'm feeling that BIG's ideas and design are reaching out more and more well how they are giving the form to the future that humans will be living in.
